I am watching Stephen Moffat's Doctor Who. You wear shirts about Daleks and bowties every day, which I assume is an invitation to talk about such things. Here are some questions/comments/suggestions that I would love to hear your take on:
1) This issue of "companions." I didn't watch the original series because it seemed to me, at a glance, to be some goofy guy leading around subservient young girls wearing miniskirts. And the girls were interchangeable--one left, but here was a new miniskirt; all was well. This might be wrong--I still haven't watched the old series. For Moffat, though... It's cool that the Doctor has companions who are not quite equals. He's about a thousand years older than they are and has traveled extensively. But they're always--or almost always--young women. And he is so totally in control of them. I'm not comfortable with the power dynamic--are you?
2) Best companion(s)? Why? I like the Amy/Rory shows, because they remind me of the two kids who follow Pippi Longstockings. I do not like Amy, who has a serious case of pretty-and-therefore-mean-itis. (No?)
3) Best Doctor? Matt Smith, right? Because fezzes are cool! What's that? You like David Tennant because of swords and Converse?
4) Best episodes? Lots of room for actual discussion of episodes, here.
5) A more serious question. I'm enjoying this show. My husband doesn't like it as much. We think it is perhaps a Mary Sue story for smart girls...? Infallible guy shows up out of nowhere (Seriously! Out of the time void!) and whisks her away on adventures. Any hint of romance is promptly squashed, so smart girls, you can feel okay about drooling over him for more ideological reasons. Your intelligence and capability will always be respected; it's not a princess-in-tower story. Still, it IS about a perfect guy who will always save you. It's not Twilight, but it IS a Mary Sue story, right? Is that not fair? Tell me why.
That's all for now. Discuss lots! The website is lonely.
